The Elk Corridor of Kentucky In 1997 The KFWLD started and extensive restocking program of Rocky Mountain Elk into Eastern Kentucky where they once flourished. This program has been successful beyond all expections. It started with 7 elk and in less than 10 years the herd has grown to over 6,500. The herd size will grow and be managed to stay around 15,000. Last year 60 lucky people were drawn for elk hunting tags and each year it will increase until 1,500 elk tags are granted each year. The reclaimed mountain-top-strip-mined areas in the rolling hills of Eastern Kentucky have made perfect habitat for elk. The Hal Rogers Parkway, connecting Manchester to I-75, runs through Manchester and the center of Clay County making us the "Gateway to Elk Country". We are presently developing a map with elk and white tail deer viewing locations around the county. Counties in the Elk Corridor of KY are Clay, Leslie, Perry, Knott, Letcher, and Breathitt. To read about the Corridor visit "Tour S. E. KY". Click: http://www.tourseky.com/corridor.lasso?id=6 |
Fishermen, tried of being washed off the lakes by cabin cruisers and harassed by jet skis? Come and discover Manchester's great hidden secret! It's our fishing. The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Department recently came to Manchester to conduct studies of how the fishing situation is doing locally. They traveled the waters of Goose Creek, Red Bird, South Fork of KY River, and Bert T. Combs Lake. Here are some pictures sent to us by John Williams, biologist, from the KFWLD. The fish in the pictures were returned to our waters so you can try and catch them. Make Manchester your destination for fishing in the Mountains... "come on they are waiting for you".
